Vincenzo Nibali (Liguigas-Cannondale) was the surprise winner of Tirreno-Adriatico, as former race leader Christopher Horner (RadioShack-Nissan) lost 20 seconds on the closing time trial to fall to second. Fabian Cancellara (RadioShack-Nissan) showed that he had not forgotten how to time trial, easily cruising to the win.

Nibali covered the 9.3km perfectly flat course 20 seconds slower than Cancellara, but 20 seconds faster than Horner, allowing the Italian to leapfrog from third to first. Roman Kreuziger of Astana put in a slow ride to fall to third place overall.

Four-time world champion Cancellara had an early start time and set a time that no one else could come close to, coming in with a time of 10:36. Second place went to his teammate Daniele Bennati at 12 seconds down, with Cameron Meyer third at 16 seconds.
