Oh god, another wheel size. The Trek Stache 9 29+ hardtail rolls on 50mm wide 29er rims topped with fat 3in tyres . At first glance, it seems that this is some kind of lighter weight/duty fat bike, but the Stache has its roots firmly in the trail bike family rather than one of its more eccentric relations.

Frame and equipment: not an instant heavyweight as far as value goes

On the face of it the Stache 9’s price tag seems steep for an alloy hardtail – there’s some nice kit on there without any obvious howlers, but it’s certainly not the most competitively specced bike for the price.

Bontrager’s huge 3in Chupacabra treads roll on Sun Ringle 50mm rims, laced to quality DT Swiss 350 hubs – sadly lacking the 36 point engagement freehub. They also use the new, wider ‘Boost’ standard hubs, with a 110mm front spacing matched
